Greetings Foucault fans,
I was in fact myself interested in this theme of Tribe as
extended or expanded Panop. , so i did a search and found yur tribe...
Of course i knew Foucault would be a likely subject to pop up.
But what was a very nice discovery was that this very question
was brought up so recently , and unfortunately ended in a myserious cul de sac .... hehe...
no no, i have no conspiracy theory about that, but interesting of course...
Howie your response is curious to me for a couple of reasons.
( re: Tribe as Panopticon)
One, in the subject matter of this tribe the internet is omitted as a subject for Foucaultian
investigations. And it seems to me that's where conversation on these themes would get really interesting.
Two, and this is just a spontaneous and subjective take, anyone who does Not edit themselves
in public or a public forum is likely to end up an outcast, dead, in prison, or in an insane asylum... well in the latter case,
since the Reagan era that's not always an option in the US, so let, say homeless. Well, ok there are other scenarios, but i'm going for the hyperboles for the fun of it.
Of course there's any number of people who don't Need to edit themselves, because they have already downloaded a good dose of the social programs and maybe don't get Outside much... ( outside, say as in Andrei Codrescue's "Disappearance of the Outside" ). Or rather, the so-called "unedited subject" is in a bit of ego and id self-suppression and/or has strangely arrived at the conclusion that world is running along just fine, imperilaism, violence, and devastation unchecked et al. And then lets say there's a number of avatars out there doing a dance, i'm sure.
Now with that said, my, there certainly are a lot of wild and uninhibited thoughts streaming thru here... you might say.
Now i'm hardly a well-read Foucaultian, so i have really no idea how his legacy might reflect on these matters...
would love to hear some opinions out there.
But from my own bricolage of philosophical readings , sc-fi, sociological interests, art (brut) worlds, new media explorations, etc... I have come to a wide range of serious questions regarding net behaviours juxtaposed to "the incredibly shrinking realtime" and the ugly denominator of the State.
all for now,
good to see a Foucault tribe in action!
salut!

Re: Sooo panopticon, the triber edited himself out...hehe.
Wed, March 15, 2006 - 10:56 PMhi umm....i didn't quite understand your comments =)
all i got from your post was:
1) panopticon discussion ended in cul-de-sac
2) the internet as a medium should be a fascinating topic as a metaphor for a modern-day panopticon (which i agree and tried to get started)
3) editing is necessary (otherwise u would be committed)
the last part was where you lost me....are u SURE u edited your post? haha...j/k

Re: Sooo panopticon, ...editing ...hehe.
Thu, March 16, 2006 - 7:18 PMhi Howie et al,
haha. i do really need an Editor, especially when i'm tribing, surfing, and supposedly working for an employer simultaneously...
so that wasn't the clearest of entries... and sorry, somehow it took off on a polemical tone from left field.
I realized later that the Foucault tribe description Does in fact speak of "mass media" applications ... and thus of course the internet.
um , so my topic ... what was my point?
Tribe as Panopticon...
There are undoubtedly panoptical fx playing out in an internet public forum ... No??!
Of course Foucault readers will know this already... but as a starting off point:
(From Wikipeda): The [panopticon] concept is to allow an observer to observe (-opticon) all (pan-) prisoners without the prisoners being able to tell if they are being observed or not, thus conveying a "sentiment of an invisible omniscience":
Given recent NSA developments, Total Information Awareness , and other modern (republican) treats, this invisible omniscience is nowhere more "fun and easy" than in these here virtual pipelines.
Whether or not this is fully grasped by the primary tribe networker say when discussing his/her cultural interests, fetishes, perceptions et al, this might Seem to be an irrelevant factor... but then perhaps it IS or, will be, one of the actual gravitational axes which shapes what Tribe as a whole becomes and what tribes flourish.
Anecdotally, when I read people's interests I see a Lot of socially concious people around here. Makes sense given the
demographic of people who have excess time for net socializing and theorizing and are saavy to the more sophisticated forums on the internet. But a tribe like the League of Abundance has about 60 members ; and, well , no need to give an example for the larger entertainment " Tribes, take yur pick.
Well that is also just mirroring the realworld social traffic ( which is increasingly odd in light of all of society's fairly unambigous looming crises ), but then that might get me started on why the panopticon of the everyday is no longer a prison architecture, but that of a 3-ring consumer circus with very fortified exits... or in the situationist lingo: a spectacle.
...
probably still in Serious need of an editor and/or translation,
but hope this triggers some more thoughts on Tribe as Panopticon...
ciao,
